ST. LOUIS—After a rocky start to the season, MBU Women's Soccer is beginning to find its rhythm. The Spartans downed Evangel University 1-0 on Friday afternoon for their second straight one-goal win.
It took just over 15 minutes for the Spartans to open the scoring. The buildup play began when
Arika Buxton fed a pass to
Sami Mabee. Mabee used a no-look backheel pass to send
Gianna Gore into the penalty area. Gore's initial shot was blocked but the rebound ricocheted right back at her and then off her and into the net.
Gore's first goal of the season was all the Spartans would need though they did not lack chances for the next 75 minutes. They attempted 16 shots compared to just one for Evangel. MBU goalkeeper
Ashton Lindsley did not have to make a save to earn her first shutout as a Spartan.
The Spartans (2-4) are back in action at home next Wednesday against No. 21 Cumberland University (2-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm at Spartan Field.
