ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer was unlucky to fall 2-1 to (RV) Baker (Kan.) in double overtime on Saturday night. The Spartans will now look ahead to the start of AMC play next week at home versus Lyon.
After a quiet first half from both sides on Saturday at Spartan Field, the action began to heat up around the hour mark. On a 50/50 ball at the top of the Spartan penalty area, both MBU's
Jamie Theusch and Baker's Melissa Siegel got there at the same time. Theusch's attempt to clear ricocheted off Siegel then back at her. According to the head official standing close to midfield, it grazed off Theusch's hand. A penalty was awarded, and Siegel converted to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
The Spartans may have felt hard done by the call, but they weren't about to roll over. In the 74
th minute,
Madi Dunahue, last season's leading scorer, took charge. The winger cut to the inside onto her strong left foot and ripped a shot from 15 yards out. It dipped just under the crossbar and in. Dunahue's first goal of the season tied the game at 1-1.
The deadlock persisted through the end of regulation and one full 10-minute sudden OT period. Two minutes into the second overtime, the Spartans won a corner to be taken by Dunahue.
Gianna Gore charged into the six-yard box for a free header but, this time, the ball caromed off the crossbar and out.
Seven minutes later, Baker made the Spartans pay. Off a giveaway deep in MBU territory, a shot from the Wildcats' Macie Albright beat goalkeeper
Hanna Harrison to the bottom corner for the game-winner.
Missouri Baptist finishes the non-conference portion of the schedule at 2-6 with the most important month of the season set to begin next Saturday. The first AMC matchup of the season will see Lyon College visit Spartan Field for a 1 pm kickoff.
