ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist Men's Basketball improved to 6-0 in the AMC with a thrilling 74-70 win over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (UHSP) on Thursday night. The four-point margin of victory was the smallest of the season but with it, the Spartans are now the last unbeaten team in the conference.
UHSP (6-10, 2-3 AMC) entered off a win over previously unbeaten William Woods on Tuesday and the Eutectics were ready for a battle again on Thursday. After an early 14-8 lead for the Spartans, the home side fought back to eventually take a 29-24 advantage. The teams went to intermission tied at 35.
In the second half, the Spartans seemed to be sitting pretty with a 55-47 edge and 12 minutes to go. Once again though, the Eutectics were not about to concede. An 8-1 run capped off by a three from leading scorer Will Feese cut it to 56-55.
UHSP took a 62-61 advantage with 6:28 remaining. They held the lead for the next three minutes until a jumper from
Brendon Hardy followed by a
Jadis White steal and
John Yaeger fast break layup made it 67-64 Mo. Bap. The Spartans would hold off the upset attempt in the final two minutes by converting 7-8 free throw attempts.
Logging a new career-high of 21 points,
Jadis White finished as the Spartans' leading scorer. White was 7-11 from the field including 2-3 from 3PT.
River Reed and
John Yaeger each had 12 points. Yaeger's seven rebounds were a team high.
Brendon Hardy finished with 10 points in 33 minutes. Hardy is now just eight points away from 1,000 for his career.
The Spartans have one more difficult test this week and it comes in the form of Central Baptist on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs were 4-0 in conference play until a road loss to William Woods on Thursday. The battle for first place on Saturday tips off at 3 pm in the Carl and Deloris Petty SRC.
