COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri Baptist University Women's Soccer fought hard for 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell short at No. 13-ranked Columbia College. In a battle between the top-two teams in the AMC standings and both unbeaten in league play, the Cougars came away with the 3-1 victory at R. Marvin Owens Field.
It was an intimidating start for the Spartans as Columbia was able to put up two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. MBU pressed on the gas and was able to get cut into the lead with a goal of their own in the 17
th minute. Junior
Mara George scored off an outside cross that came from forward
Gianna Gore. George improved her goal count to seven on the season.
Down 2-1 at halftime, the Spartans (8-4-2, 4-1 AMC) kept the game within a goal's reach but were unable to find scoring opportunities in the second half. The Cougar defense yielded just one shot after halftime. No. 13 Columbia delivered a dagger in the 86
th minute with an insurance goal from Isabella Govero, which represented her second goal of the game.
The first-place Cougars (9-3-1, 4-0 AMC) controlled the final stat line with an 18-3 shot advantage and 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Missouri Baptist goalkeeper
Hanna Harrison pulled in eight saves to prevent any further damage by the Cougars.
The Spartans will return home for the last time in the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 18 as they play host to Central Baptist College (6-7-1, 3-2 AMC). Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
