ST. LOUIS – The 17
th-ranked Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team coasted to a 25-16, 25-6, 25-9 Senior Night win over Central Baptist College on Thursday evening. The Spartans overpowered the Mustangs in all facets of the match to pick up sweep No. 19 of the year.
Additionally, with Thursday's victory, Missouri Baptist hit the 25-win mark for the 12
th straight season. The Spartans improved to 25-3, 8-1 AMC while Central Baptist dropped to 4-17, 1-8 AMC.
From the get-go, MoBap bottled up CBC's attack holding the Mustangs to a negative hitting clip in all three sets. For the match, Central Baptist managed just 12 kills with a -0.164 hitting clip.
Fitting for Senior Night, the Spartans relied heavily on the honored seniors offensively as
Rachel Kinney,
Liz van Houwelingen,
Carlee Wise and
Kaili Smith combined for 29 of the team's 34 kills and 4.5 total blocks.
In the opening set, it was
Rachel Kinney who was the prime target for starting setter
Kaili Smith. Kinney accounted for nearly half of the Spartans' points in the 25-16 set win with six kills on eight swings as well as three service aces. Smith dished out 13 assists setting for the Spartans in the opening frame.
The second set got out of reach real quickly with a monster service run from senior
Liz van Houwelingen. After Central Baptist tied the set at 1-all, van Houwelingen and the Spartans went on a 16-0 run that included three aces and a host of Central Baptist attack errors – nine to be exact. MBU ran away with Set Two, 25-6, hitting .409% to the Mustangs' -.296%.
Set Three was much of the same thing as the Spartans jumped out to another large lead. MBU bumped up its attack percentage in the third with an impressive .500% clip, while adding five more service aces and four more blocks to the final tally. van Houwelingen was at it again with two more service aces to push her total to five on the night, while grad senior
Nathiellen Machado pitched in two along with one from
Tessa Schneider. With five aces, van Houwelingen matched her career-best while also achieving season highs in kills (9) and digs (9).
Rachel Kinney led the way for MBU with 11 kills, no errors, and a .611 hitting percentage, both match highs. Other notable stat lines included
Carlee Wise with six kills, a career-best four digs, two blocks and her first collegiate service ace,
Kaili Smith, who had 15 assists, eight digs, five blocks (1 S, 4 A), and three kills, and
Sara Klunder (4 K, .800%, 3 B).
No. 17 Missouri Baptist will wrap up the regular season on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host Lyon College (10-14, 4-4 AMC).
