MBU SHUTS OUT WBU 2-0 IN AMC QUARTERFINALS

ST. LOUIS- MBU Women's soccer made a valiant 2-0 win over Williams Baptist (3-13-1) in the AMC Quarterfinals on Friday night at Spartan Field. The season now continues with the semifinals against Harris-Stow State University on Monday.

The Spartans controlled the play from the opening kickoff, but they couldn't open scoring until the 23rd minute. Senior forward Gianna Gore put a solid header straight past the Eagles goalkeeper, Paige Strode, off a wide cross from Madi Dunahue.

Williams Baptist bogged down and allowed MBU another scoring opportunity just five minutes later. With the wind in the Spartan's favor and an Eagles foul on Emma Selsor, senior defender Brianna Merchant was given the power to send a freekick from 42 yards out. Merchant successfully located the ball (27:46) over the back line of defense and just out of reach of the WBU goalkeeper.

Missouri Baptist gained an impressive 2-0 lead in the first half but did not continue scoring the remainder of the half.
There was no panic from the Spartans starting the second half. Despite the home side controlling the plays the Eagles pressed hard on the Spartan defense and initiated four shots in the half. Missouri Baptist goalkeeper Hanna Harrison saved two of the four attempts.

MBU held themselves accountable and fought off scoring from Williams Baptist.

The Spartans (12-4-2) held on to advance in the AMC Semifinals against Harris-Stowe University (12-4-1). The two teams might encounter a power struggle to fight for the final spot. The final shot count was 9-4 in favor the MBU. Kick off is set for Monday Nov. 7 at 7:00 PM playing at Spartan Field.
