GARY, Ind. – The good times have been rolling for Missouri Baptist women's basketball over the last month, and that did not stop as the Spartans traveled to the shores of Lake Michigan on Wednesday evening.
MBU put up its fifth-straight win with a 70-57 triumph against Indiana University Northwest (IUN) (8-4) in the final non-conference game on the road of the season. MoBap (7-2, 4-0 in AMC) were propelled by a strong performance from guard
Tionne Taylor, whose 28-point new season high effort led all scorers and improved the senior's scoring average to 17.4 points per game.
The Spartans have become a first half team as of late, and the game with the Redhawks was no different. Since MBU's last defeat, the Spartans have trailed just once after 20 minutes of play. MoBap took a back-and-forth first quarter by a score of 19-17 before limiting the home side to 11 points in the second with a strong defensive effort. MBU went to the locker room ahead of IUN 35-28, with an 8-1 run late in the quarter and a
Kasey Rice basket at the buzzer serving as momentum builders.
The Spartans flirted with a double-digit lead for much of the third quarter and took control in the fourth. The visitors shot 45.3 percent from the field and outdid the Redhawks 27-9 in points off the bench and had a 18-14 advantage in points off turnovers.
Taylor was the offensive star in the game, but junior
Bryce Dowell played the most minutes and had 13 points off the bench and led in rebounds with six. Graduate senior
Kelsie Williams and junior
Nyah Ford produced all-around showings, with both getting five points and five rebounds. Williams added four steals, four assists, and two blocks while Ford had three assists and three steals, respectively.
Other MBU performances of note included
Alexis Allstun (7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) and
Kayleigh Winch (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists).
Missouri Baptist will end the fall semester with a bang. The matchup many have circled on the calendar from the start of the year will be coming to the Carl & Deloris Petty SRC on Saturday, Dec. 17th at 1:00 pm. American Midwest rival Columbia College will be coming to town. The Cougars and Spartans will both be looking for forms of revenge, as CC eliminated the Spartans from the semifinal game of the AMC championship last February, while MBU defeated the reigning AMC tournament champs in the regular season.
