FREMONT, Neb. – The Missouri Baptist men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 8-6 decision on the road Friday afternoon to a Midland University team that has now won three straight in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). With the loss MBU drops to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Spartan attack was led by
Alex Scott and
Jaxon Haas with two goals apiece, as well as
Noah Campbell who led the team in points with one goal and a game-high three assists. Missouri Baptist held a 20-15 advantage in shots on goal but struggled in faceoffs against MU's Marty Gospodarski going just 4-of-18 (22.2%).
Mirroring the start to last year's meeting between the two teams, Midland midfielder Savion Johnson put the Spartans in an early hole with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the contest. The Warriors stretched their lead to three goals before MBU got on the board.
The Spartans converted on the game's first extra-man opportunity with an
Alex Scott
(Gr. / Port Orchard, Wash.) goal assisted by
Noah Campbell with 3:15 remaining in the opening period.
Missouri Baptist won the second quarter, outscoring Midland 2-1 with goals from
Jaxon Haas and
Connor Hickman. Hickman's goal with 14 seconds remaining in the second gave the Spartans a nice boost heading into halftime.
Out of the break,
Alex Scott scored an equalizer halfway through the third period representing his second goal of the game.
In a game of cat and mouse, it was the Warriors who staged the bigger run in the second half. With the game deadlocked at 4-4, Midland rattled off four straight goals, which too much to overcome for the Spartans. To lessen the blow,
Jaxon Haas scored again with a man down (4:34) followed by a
Noah Campbell as the clock was winding down (0:05).
The Spartans received a win by forfeit for Saturday due to a lack of numbers within the Morningside University men's lacrosse program. MBU will now play at home for its next five contests starting with a rescheduled game against University of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Tuesday, March 29 at 5 p.m.
