ST. LOUIS – In an important KCAC contest against third place in the conference, No. 8 Missouri Baptist women's lacrosse made a statement by putting a thorough 19-1 thrashing on (RV) Ottawa University. MBU continued its fine offensive form in front of a stout defensive effort, with freshman
Lydia Cornett leading the charge.
MBU (8-2, 5-0 KCAC) continued its winning conference ways with the victory against Ottawa (6-4, 3-2 KCAC) and moved its win streak up to five. Cornett was a star, putting home seven goals and assisting on another.
The first quarter saw five different Spartans score, with graduate senior
Ashley Avery opening the MBU account for the fourth different game this season. Midfielders
Chayleb Deves,
Brianna Fischer and
Gianna D'Alto also tallied in the early going for Mobap. After the Braves' lone goal with 2:34 remaining in the first, the attacking pair of sophomore
Caroline Karr and Cornett would take over, scoring the next seven goals.
Midfield dynamo
Jordan Haeusser added back-to-back goals in the third period and secured a hat trick later in the fourth to reach 30 for the season. Deves would add two more in the second half for her seventh straight game with three points or more.
Other notable Spartan performances included
MacKaylee Miller (one goal) and goalkeeper
Amelia Shaw (seven saves).
Missouri Baptist will now face its biggest conference test of the year in first place and No. 6-ranked Benedictine College, who have had the Spartans' number in the last three meetings between the two schools. The Ravens are the defending KCAC tournament champions after defeating MBU last season in the final 23-3, so coach
Max Ruhl's squad will undoubtedly be looking to get revenge.
