BATESVILLE, Ark. – Softball splits doubleheader on the road against Lyon College on Saturday. MBU extended their winning streak to seven games after winning game one before Lyon snapped it, taking game two.
GAME ONE
MoBap picked up a hit in the first and second inning while holding Lyon to none, but neither team could get on the board early as pitchers cruised through the first two innings. MBU refused to let pitching dictate the game as
Molly McPheeters led off the third with a walk and stole second to set up a scoring opportunity for the Spartans.
Madalyn Bone singled into left field to move McPheeters onto third. Bone then swiped second base, beating out the throw allowing McPheeters to swipe home during the commotion.
Ellie Wessel smashed a double into center field, scoring Bone, to give MoBap a 2-0 lead. After a walk put
Kolby Brake on first,
Shelby Sievers cleared the bases with a home run to extend the Spartan lead to 5-0.
Lyon failed to get on the board in the bottom of the third as MBU added another run in the top of the fourth. Needing two runs to go up eight and end game one early, MoBap delivered in the top of the sixth. Wessel continued to find her way on base, this time with a single into left to kick off the inning.
Adelynn Nelson got on base thanks to an error, advancing Wessel to second, putting the runs needed on base. Sievers singled to load the bases up for the Spartans with no outs.
Haley Tate struck out swinging but a dropped third strike allowed Wessel to come home. Nelson and Sievers to also advanced to second and third on the play.
Kaylee Morris then grounded out to the first basemen allowing Nelson to score to put the Spartans up 8-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, needing at least one run to avoid the game ending early, Lyon failed to get anyone on, as Sievers closed the door to compete her shutout. Sievers finished the complete game shutout with four strikeouts while allowing only one hit over her six innings of work. MBU only allowed one base runner during game one as they won, 8-0, to extend their winning streak to seven.
GAME TWO
Looking to remain undefeated against AMC competition and complete the sweep, MBU got the bats going early. The Spartans loaded up the bases and with two outs,
Kaylee Morris singled to center field allowing Brake and Wessel to score and give MoBap the early 2-0 lead. Tate put together a strong first inning, striking out two while allowing only one base runner.
In the top of the second the Spartan attack continued to shine.
Megan Pfeiffer singled before advancing to second off of an error that put Bone on first. After a double steal, Wessel continued to give Lyon pitchers fits with a single to right field, scoring Pfeiffer and advancing Bone to third. Sievers also continued to find holes in the defense as she doubled to center field scoring Bone to extend the Spartan lead to 5-0. During a one, two, three inning, Tate once again shut down the opposing batters in the bottom of the second.
Lyon was able to slow the Spartan offense in the top of the third, allowing only one hit and took advantage of the momentum shift, answering back in the bottom of the inning with five runs on five hits to tie the game. MBU refused to back down in the top of the fourth picking up two runs on four hits. Sievers scored Brake with a double into left field, before being brought home by a single off the bat of Tate, to take a 7-5 lead.
The Scots refused to fold, adding two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to once again knot the score up. After a quiet fifth inning on both sides, Lyon took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth, picking up a run to go up 8-7.
MBU didn't stay down long, as
Kaylee Morris singled to score Tate in the top of the seventh to once again tie things up. Tate scored off an error to once again put MoBap on top. Bone extended the lead with a single that scored
Isabella Schlemmer to put the Spartans up 10-8. Lyon answered once again in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own, to tie things up at ten apiece and force extra innings.
After both teams failed to produce any runs during the during the eighth and ninth innings, MBU capitalized on the extra innings base runner. Wessel started the inning on second base per the extra innings rule. Brake lined out to left field to give the Spartans an out before Wessel advanced to third on a ground ball from Sievers. A wild pitch allowed Wessel to take home and once again put the Spartans on top, 11-10.
Lyon got the last laugh as they scored two runs in the bottom of the 10
th to walk it off and secure the win, 12-11.
Softball aims to get back on track Tuesday, April 5th, as Williams Baptist comes to town for a doubleheader at Spartan Softball Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.
