ST. LOUIS - Missouri Baptist Softball continues to win against AMC competition, sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange University 1-0, 6-2 Saturday, to improve to 7-1 against the AMC and 16-10 overall. In conjunction with the doubleheader, the Spartans also celebrated Senior Day in between the two games, celebrating the careers of
AnnaBeth Batson,
Sydney Berry,
Madalyn Bone,
Megan Pfeiffer,
Shelby Sievers,
Ellie Wessel,
Addison Rinderer, and Jenna Crocker. The senior class didn't disappoint as Sievers earned a complete game shutout and two wins while allowing no runs to score in 10 innings of work. Berry, Sievers, Bone, and Wessel all stole a base. In addition, Bone, Pfeiffer, Sievers, and Wessel all recorded at least one hit.
Game One – Missouri Baptist 1, Hannibal-LaGrange 0
The first game was a pitcher's battle as Sievers earned the complete-game shutout, pitching 7.0 innings and only allowing four hits. All the magic happened in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Kaylee Morris put the go-ahead run on board with a single right back at the first baseman to lead off the inning. After a strikeout by
Kaitlynn Hannah, Berry reached on an error by the first baseman allowing Morris to make it all the way to third. With two outs and the game-winning run only 60 feet away, Pfeiffer laid down a perfect bunt forcing the catcher to throw to first, allowing Morris to come home. Fortunately, the throw didn't get there in time, and MBU took Game One, 1-0.
Game Two – Missouri Baptist 6, Hannibal-LaGrange 2
The Spartan offense got going quickly in game two. Bone led the game with a walk and promptly stole second to put herself in scoring position. Wessel then found the gap in right field to put herself on third base allowing Bone to score. Sievers continued the party with a double to send Wessel home and put the Spartans up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Morris grounded out later in the inning, allowing Sievers to come home and extend the Spartan lead.
Neither team could put together much offense in the second inning, but the Spartans found another run in the third.
Kolby Brake doubled to the left-field fence and was later brought home off a double by
Haley Tate.
Sievers was replaced on the mound in the top of the fourth by Tate, concluding her dominant performance as HLGU only picked up seven hits over her 10 innings of work on the day. The Trojans were able to put a runner in scoring position but could not capitalize in the top of the inning. MBU continued to slowly add to their lead, picking up a run in the bottom of the fourth. Pfeiffer singled to lead off the inning and was advanced by a single from Wessel. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance. With runners on second and third, Sievers hit a fly ball into right, and Pfeiffer was able to score off the sac fly, putting the Spartans up 5-0.
Tate ran into trouble during the top half of the fifth as a pair of unearned runs were scored by HLG. The Trojans could not find any more offense, and MBU added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Wessel singled to score Bone. MoBap took Game Two, 6-2, completing the sweep on Senior Day.
Softball will be back in action at home on Wednesday, April 13, for a rescheduled doubleheader with Williams Baptist. The series was originally scheduled for April 4, but was wiped out due to rain.
