MCPHEETERS WALKS IT OFF FOR THE SPARTANS

COLUMBIA, Mo. –  Missouri Baptist softball wins a nail bitter over Williams Baptist, behind career day for Molly McPheeters, to advance into day two of pool play on Tuesday.

The Spartans warmed up the bats early scoring two in the bottom half of the first inning. After a line out by Madalyn Bone, Ellie Wessel crushed a ball over the left field wall to give MBU the early 1-0 lead. Kolby Brake was walked in the following at bat and quickly brought home by a double off the bat of Shelby Sievers.

Taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second, MBU looked to separate themselves early, as Molly McPheeters homered to right field. Williams Baptist refused to go away adding two runs of their own in the top of the fourth and another to tie things up in the top of the sixth.

With the game knotted at three in the bottom of the seventh inning during the opening round of the AMC championships, the Spartans delivered. With two outs and nobody on, McPheeters smoked her second home run of the game, this time to center field to walk it off for the Spartans. The sophomore from St. Louis not only collected her first home run of the season but also of her Spartan career with the two-home run day.

Sievers collected her 15th win of the season striking out five, allowing only four hits and one earned run over a complete game of work.

Softball will be back in action tomorrow May 4 in Columbia, Mo., against the winner of third-seeded Central Baptist and sixth-seeded William Woods. The game is set to begin at noon at the Antimi Softball Complex.
