WOMEN'S SOCCER BATTLES FONTBONNE TO ARDUOUS DRAW

ST. LOUIS – Senior forward Gianna Gore scored her third goal of the season as the Missouri Baptist University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at home Thursday evening against Fontbonne University.

While the Spartans' three-match winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Griffins, MBU's unbeaten streak extended to four games. The Spartans now sit at 3-0-1 heading into next week's gauntlet at home that includes matches against No. 7-ranked Marian University (Ind.) and No. 3-ranked Central Methodist University (Mo.).

Entering the day in search of win No. 4, MBU certainly put itself in a power position striking first in the sixth minute. Approaching the endline, Morgan Hollenbeck sent a perfect cross over the head of Fontbonne goalkeeper Mary Beers and a Griffin defender to a wide-open Gianna Gore. Flicking it in with a header, Gianna Gore opened the scoring and provided Missouri Baptist with an energizing start to the game.

Tightening up on defense, the Spartans held the Griffins in check for the next 35 minutes. Unfortunately, a foul inside of the Spartan box set up a penalty kick for Fontbonne's Krystal Kohenskey at the 41:59 mark. Kohenskey went lower left and put it just out of reach of a diving Hanna Harrison.

Tied 1-1 heading into halftime, the two teams were fairly even in goal-scoring opportunities after the break with each putting two shots on goal. Hanna Harrison's second-half saves off of Griffin corners proved to be key in keeping the game at 1-1 and avoiding a heartbreaking loss.

The final shot count for the night was 10-7 in favor of Fontbonne.

Missouri Baptist continues its three-game homestand on Monday, Sept. 5 as it welcomes the No. 7 team in the NAIA to town – Marian (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
