SPARTANS CRUISE PAST COTTEY WITH 3-0 SWEEP

ST. LOUIS – No. 5 Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball made quick work of Cottey College on Saturday morning to move to 2-0 early in American Midwest Conference action. MBU showcased its depth in the 25-16, 25-12, 25-18 sweep of the Comets, as it got production out of 15 different Spartans.

Since their minor setback in Columbia on Sept. 9, the Spartans have reeled off three straight wins at home including back-to-back sweeps to kick off the AMC slate.

Missouri Baptist (12-2, 2-0 AMC) trailed twice in the match, falling behind 1-0 in the first and second sets. Otherwise, the fifth-ranked Spartans imposed their will on the Comets, who were coming off a 3-1 victory at Harris-Stowe State on Friday. MBU had advantages of 48-22 in kills, .326-.106 in hitting %, 12-1 in service aces, 9-2 in blocks and 43-26 in digs.

Setters Shannon McLain and Luiza Goncalves were able to spread the wealth on Saturday as six Spartans recorded 6+ kills in the match. Senior Liz van Houwelingen paced Missouri Baptist and tied her season-high with eight kills. Fellow Netherlands native Kirsten van der Vleuten and Rachel Kinney were next in line with seven kills apiece, followed by Carlee Wise, Maria Hanusik, and Sara Klunder with six apiece. Both Wise and Hanusik were error free on attack and busy at the net combining for 12 kills on 19 swings and 7 blocks (1 S, 6 A).

McLain registered her second double-double in three outings – 21 assists and 10 digs – to go along with a match-best three service aces. Joining McLain with multiple aces from the service line were Kinney (2), Machado (2), and Goncalves (2).

Coming in to provide a jolt in the third set were freshmen Morgan Ruff and Kassie Lee, transfers Marina Obradovic and Syan Larmond, as well as Tessa Schneider who tossed on the libero jersey for the final set.

The Spartans will take their undefeated AMC record to Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday and UHSP on Wednesday.
