ST. LOUIS –MBU women's basketball, the hottest team in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) by some margin, ran its win streak to seven games and achieved a regular season sweep of William Woods University (WWU) on Thursday evening. Amid a four-game run of games on the road, MoBap kept the pedal down and saw a trifecta of players put up strong scoring numbers.
The Spartans (14-3, 10-1 in AMC) saw seniors
Alexis Allstun,
Kasey Rice, and junior
Bryce Dowell all shell out 15 points in the 70-56 victory against the Owls (5-13, 3-8 in AMC). Allstun found herself in the right spots for putbacks and layups all evening and led the visitors in rebounds (8) and blocks (4). Rice took the most shots of any Spartan player and hit at a 7-for-16 clip (43.8 percent) with four assists to boot. Dowell was her usual spark off the bench self, scoring on six attempts from 23 minutes.
MBU played a suffocating brand of defense and won the turnover battle 20-8 while nabbing 13 steals that was highlighted by six from guard
Deyana Dodd. The Spartans were outrebounded 42-36, but a dominance in scoring in the paint (42 points) along with 23 points off the WWU turnovers made up for getting beat on the glass.
After the score was tied 2-2 a minute and a half into the contest, MoBap led the rest of the way. The Spartans controlled much of the game, with the advantage getting to as much as 17 in the third period. The Owls would creep back and forced MBU to shut the door in the final frame. After the lead was cut down to eight points, the Spartans ended regulation on a 10-4 run to cement the double-digit victory.
Other statlines of note for MBU came from
Tionne Taylor (9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists),
Deyana Dodd (8 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists), and
Nyah Ford (4 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds).
Missouri Baptist will wrap the stretch of road games with a trip to Batesville, Ark., on Saturday, Jan 19th, to play the Scots of Lyon College at 1:00 pm.
