Spartans Put On A Show On Senior Day

In the season finale MBU racked up 642 yards offensively as they topped Central Methodist 56-24.

The Spartans started the day with the ball in their hands and they ran the ball successfully as Darius Morrison rushed for 62 yards on five carries before Jordan Simpson found Joseph White wide open for a 32-yard passing touchdown.

MBU's defense also found success on their first drive as Darryl Krieger jumped a route and pulled down an interception to get the ball back for the Spartans.

Central Methodist got an interception of their own before hitting a big play that tied the game up at seven apiece.

Towards the end of the first quarter, the Spartans were still running the ball well and got themselves into the redzone to start the second frame of action.

On the second play of the new quarter Lionel Banks got across the goal line to retake the lead for MoBap.

On CMU's following drive the Spartans forced a three and out with two pass break ups coming from Zeppelin Velder.

After MBU got the ball back they went 75 yards on 12 plays on a drive that spanned eight minutes and 47 seconds and ended with Simpson lunging into the endzone for another Spartan touchdown.

The Eagles responded with a field goal, but gave the Spartans enough time that they would be able to score again before half, and that is exactly what they did as Marcellus Griffin returned the kickoff 94-yards to put MBU up 28-10 going into halftime.

At the break Simpson was 9-15 for 122 yards and a touchdown and Morrison had rushed for 111 yards on 14 attempts.

Central Methodist scored on their first possession of the second half on a 54-yard touchdown catch and run.

Like in the first half, it did not take long for the Spartans to answer as Simpson hit Tyler Watson for a 75-yard touchdown pass to regain a three possession lead.

Kaden Lutjen-Williams ended CMU's next drive early as he hauled down an interception.

Following the turnover, Morrison broke loose for a big gain as he rushed for 45 yards on the first play of the drive.

Down near the goal line, MBU was able to punch it in with a run from Morrison, but a pair of penalties pushed them back to the 31 yard line.

On the next play Simpson found Kameron Sloan for a touchdown to make it 42-16.

Morrison finally found his way into the endzone on their next drive as he ran the ball in from just one yard out to increase their lead again.

CMU scored on the first drive of the fourth quarter to make it 49-24.

Halfway through the fourth quarter Banks broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown scamper for the final Spartan touchdown of the day as they would go on to win 56-24.

Simpson finished 13-20 for 269 yards through the air with Watson and Sloan receiving for 89 and 88 yards, respectively.

Two of MBU's running backs rushed for over 100 yards as Morrison ran for 176 and Banks ran for 109.

Jonah Cox was perfect on PATs as he went 8-8.

Blake Kight led in tackles for the Spartans with 10 solo and three assists for a total of 13 which tied his season record of 111 total tackles from last season.

The 56-24 win over CMU puts a wrap on the Spartans 2023 campaign as they finished with a 2-8 record and 1-4 in the Heart of America Conference.
