Spartans’ Season Ends with AMC Semifinal Loss at (5) Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. – In order to continue their late season run, the Missouri Baptist University Women's Soccer team needed to do two things that an American Midwest Conference team hadn't against the Columbia Cougars this season. They would need to win the match, but before that they would need to score a goal against CC. On Monday night in Columbia, Mo. the Spartans could do neither, losing to the Cougars by a 4-0 score.

Columbia looked every bit like the top-seed in the AMC Tournament and the fifth-ranked team in the NAIA. They had the far more frequent and dangerous scoring chances, and they were able to capitalize. Columbia held a 17 to three advantage in shots, and more importantly were able to put four goals past Spartans goalkeeper Gabby Mattli. In fact, if not for some sensational stops by the junior from Washington, Mo. the margin may have been much bigger. The final stats credit Mattli with making nine saves, and some of them were of the acrobatic variety.

The Cougars scored two first have goals, with the first coming in the fifth minute and the second coming 10 minutes later. Fifteen minutes into the match the home team lead 2-0, which took quite a bit of steam out of MBU.

Seven minutes into the second half Columbia struck again and finished out the scoring 10 minutes later when Cougar forward Macie Lucas completed a natural hat-trick.

For the Spartans it was a down night in an otherwise positive last three weeks. MBU came into the game unbeaten in their last five games and having outscored their opponents 21 to two. That all changed tonight when they faced a Columbia team whose only loss of the season came to NCAA Division I Southeast Missouri State 1-0 on September 14. Not only did the Cougars go undefeated in conference play again this season, but they also have not surrendered a goal in their nine games against AMC opponents, while outscoring them 58-0. The Cougars are unbeaten in their last 68 games against AMC opponents dating back to the 2018 season. MBU was the last AMC team to hand them a loss, 2-1 on October 13, 2018.

The Spartans season comes to a close with a 6-11-1 record. Columbia (16-1-1) will move on to the AMC Tournament Final where they will host the second-seeded William Woods Owls on Thursday.
