Spartans Close Out Post Season With a Semifinals Loss

ST. LOUIS- For the second year in a row, Men's Soccer was taking on Columbia College in the AMC semifinals. After suffering a defeat at the hands of the Cougars in last year's tournament, the Spartans were determined to flip the script this time around. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be as Columbia secured the lone goal of the game to send them to the finals.

With a spot in the finals on the line, both teams came out aggressive looking to get the upper hand. MBU goalie, Callum McKinlay was put to the test early. Only three minutes into the game, he had to make a save against Columbia Defenseman, Luke Sowerby. The Spartan's defense was able to fend off the Cougars for the rest of the half, with only forth other shots allowed and not a single one on goal.

The Spartans were well on the attack, taking four shots of their own. Jovan Mihajlovic took his chance almost nine minutes in, but the ball went high and was of no danger to the goalie. Sean Bannon got in on the action in the first half, attempting a header that he couldn't keep on target. Marko Dordevic was the first Spartan to challenge the goalie directly, sending a header on goal and forcing the save. The sophomore made a second attempt with only a few minutes left in the half, this time he couldn't keep the ball down enough and sent it over the goal.

Sergej Misic kicked off the Spartans scoring attempts in the second half, sending a shot wide of the goal ten minutes in. Not even five minutes later, the freshman made a second attempt shooting the ball wide once again. Misic, who was a steady point of attack for the Spartans in the second half sent one on goal with only ten minutes left, bringing the Spartans shots on goal to two.

MBU totaled five shots in the second period, with another shot high by Dordevic and Jack Griffiths trying to shoot one in was blocked by a defender. McKinlay maintained a steady presence in the net for the Spartans, posting another two saves in net. The Spartans' demise came when a Columbia player fresh off the bench was able to find the back of the net fifteen minutes into the half.

With the lone goal going to the Cougars, the Spartans fell in the AMC semifinals thus marking an end to their season.
