SPARTANS WITH A WALK-OFF AND A NO-NO ON DAY 1 OF THE CAJUN COLLISION

STERLINGTON, La. – The Missouri Baptist Spartans' hot start continued in dramatic fashion as they won two games on their first day of the Cajun Collision in Sterlington, La.

GAME ONE vs. Texas A&M - Texarkana
Sophomore first baseman Cole Robinson hit a two-out walk-off two-run home run to give the Spartans a 6-5 victory in seven innings. Robinson's homer completed a three-run final at bat for the Spartans in a game they trailed throughout.

This game stared in shaky fashion for MBU as they gave up four runs to the Eagles in the first inning behind four hits and an error. The Spartans would have to wait until the bottom of the third to cut the lead in half. Blayne Yarger would lead off with a single and DJ Schmidt would chase him to second on a single of his own. Yarger and Schmidt would execute a perfect double-steal to get into scoring position. Shortstop Alex Adams would drive them both home with a two-RBI single. TAMUT would get a run back in the top of the fourth with a walk and a double, making it 5-2. That is where the game would stay until the fateful bottom of the seventh. Arturo Brito would lead off the inning by reaching on an error and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Yarger would pop out to left field and Schmidt grounded out to the third, with Brito advancing to third with two outs. Adams would get Brito home with a single to make the score 5-4 Eagles. TAMUT then went to the bullpen for a pitching change. On the first pitch from the new hurler, Robinson would deposit the ball over the fence and the Spartans would walk-it off with a 6-5 victory.

Adams had a three for four game with three RBIs. Robinson was two for four with those two decisive RBIs. Brady Stephan was credited with the win by going three strong innings giving up just one hit with two strikeouts. Tanner Young got the start and pitched the first four innings surrendering four earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two while not figuring in the decision. Robinson's home run got young off the hook for the loss and gave the win to Stephan.

GAME TWO vs. Texas Wesleyan
While the first game was decided mostly by the Spartan bats, the night cap was all about the pitching. Tony Caldwell, Anthony Green and Landon Albers combined to throw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Rams of Texas Wesleyan University. The final score was 8-0.

While all three pitchers were impressive in the feat, Green was especially dominant. The junior fireballer from St. Louis went four innings, facing just two over the minimum number of batters with 10 strikeouts and two walks against 14 hitters faced. He was preceded to the hill by Tony Caldwell. Making his first start of the season after coming in in relief last weekend, the sophomore from Strafford, Mo. threw two innings with three strikeouts while hitting one batter. Albers came in for duty in the seven and worked around a lead off walk. He would finish off the Rams via a pop-out, a fly-out, and a ground out.

The no-hitter is the first for the Spartans since Matt Hess threw a seven-inning gem against Lyon College on April 3, 2021.

Offensively, Cole Robinson hit his second home run of the day to get the scoring started in the second inning. Jakob Kouneski would follow that with a triple and later come home on a double-play groundout from catcher Joe Schmidt. The Spartans led 2-0 after an inning and half.  The Spartans would tack on four more runs in the fourth when Blane Besse walked and came home on a Blayne Yarger double. Caesar Soto reached on an error, then Alex Adams tripled to score both Soto and Yarger. Cole Robinson would get this second RBI of the game and fourth of the day by singling home Adams. The four-run inning made it 6-0 MBU. The Spartans would get their final two runs in the fourth when Besse led off the second-consecutive inning with a walk then would advance around to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. Yarger walked and stole second. Soto would score Bessed on a sacrifice fly, which would also move Yarger up to third base. He would score on another wild pitch to give the Spartans their final lead of 8-0.

Adams and Robinson both had two hits and two RBIs, while Besse had two runs scored.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday for the first of two more starting at 11:00 a.m. First up is Southwestern Christian University, then MBU will take on 19th-ranked University of Science and Arts (Okla.) at 2:30 p.m. to finish out their trip to the Cajun Collision in Sterlington.
