ST. LOUIS, Mo. – If this game was a boxing match, they probably would have stopped it early. The Missouri Baptist Spartans had another 15 hits, including six home runs, in throttling the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets 19-1 before a light crowd on a cold, breezy day a Spartan Baseball Field on Tuesday.
The Spartans batted around in both the first and second innings in putting up eight, then seven runs respectively. They sent eight batters to the plate in the third and came away with three more runs. After three innings the Spartans led 18-0.
Harris-Stowe managed their only run of the game with two singles and a groundout in the top of the fourth to make it 18-1.
Head Coach
Eddie Uschold allowed all his starters to rest after four innings, including the beneficiary of all the offense, starting pitcher
Billy Heil. The native of St. Louis finished his day with four innings pitched, giving up one run on three hits, walking one and striking out four. He gave way to
Tony Caldwell who was a welcome site seeing his first action on the mound since February 21.
Making his debut at the plate this season, St Charles, Mo. native
Sean McRaven hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth, making the final score 19-1. McRaven has appeared in four games primarily as a pinch runner, but showed he has a little pop in his bat in his only trip to the plate on the day. His success means he currently has the ever-elusive 1.000 batting average to go along with a 4.000 slugging percentage.
Two Spartans had multiple homers in the game. Blaine Besse was three for three at the dish with two home runs, three runs scored and a startling seven RBIs. Catcher
Jakob Kouneski took two out of the yard as well in going two for three with two bombs and four RBIs.
Blayne Yarger hit his second home run of the season in the second inning.
With the victory, Heil is now 3-1 on the year. The two home runs move Besse to second on the team with seven, just one behind team leader
Cole Robinson. The seven RBIs give him 33 on the season, trailing Robinson by two in that category. With his two home runs, Kouneski now has five on the season which places him in third on the team this season.
During the three-game series, the Spartans outscored the Hornets 44-6 and outhit them 51-13. Those 51 hits included 14 home runs.
Alex Adams and
Joe Schmidt also had multiple-homer games in the series. In the three game set, Besse finished seven of 11 at the plate, with three home runs, nine runs scored and 12 RBIs.
The tenth-ranked MBU Spartans are now 23-4 on the season as they await a weekend matchup at home with Central Baptist College. Weather permitting, the Mustangs and Spartans will play a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader beginning Friday at Noon at Spartan Baseball Field.
