ST. LOUS- Men's Soccer was unable to come out on top today in their non-conference matchup against the Clarke University Pride.
MBU was putting on the pressure in the first half, outshooting Clarke, 10-8. The Spartans' best opportunity came 13 minutes in when the Spartans had three back-to-back shots on goal. MBU chose to play it short on the corner kick, hoping to open up some options. Senior,
Jack Griffiths took that opportunity to make a cross right in front of the goal. Junior,
Andrew Parnas used his height to land a header on the pass and knocked it into the hands of the goalie. On the rebound, sophomore
Marko Dordevic made an attempt for a goal, but it was once again saved by the Pride goalie. Freshman,
Sean Bannon followed up on the rebound but was also denied.
The second half for the Spartans was a struggle. They went from double digit shots down to only four in the half with one on target. It was up to the MBU defense to keep them in the game. Senior,
Callum McKinlay was staying solid, fending off six of the Pride's shots throughout the game.
The Spartans downfall came ten minutes into the second half. A Clarke player on a breakaway managed to sneak one past McKinlay, bringing the score 0-1. MBU was unable to even the score, earning their first loss of the season.
"We weren't good enough in the second half," said Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "We did everything we wanted in the first half but when you get that many chances and don't put the ball in the back of the net it's hard to win. Callum [McKinlay] was brilliant today. Credit to Clarke for how they came out in the second half. Both Goalkeepers were tremendous today."
The Spartans will be looking to bounce back this Saturday against Bethel University at 7 PM.
