ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University Men's Wrestling squad showed no signs of mat rust after a 25-day hiatus that extended into the new year. The Spartans dispatched of the Fontbonne University Griffins 42-6 in dominating fashion on Wednesday night.
MBU tallied points in a myriad of ways, with two wins by fall, and one each by technical fall, major decision, and decision. MoBap also benefited from four weight class forfeits at 141, 149, 197, and 285. The Griffins got single decisions at 165 and 174 for their only points of the contest.
Freshman
John Davis got the Spartans rolling with a 16-2 major decision over Daniel Bauer of Fontbonne. Davis had a reversal and three takedowns in the match.
Junior
Dillon Witt wasted no time at 133 with a win by fall in 2:31 over Eric Harmon. After forfeit wins in the next few weight classes, sophomore
Joel Campbell scored the thinnest victory of the evening 2-1 over Joe Beck of the Griffins. Both wrestlers scored a single escape and Campbell won the match because of his advantage in riding time.
After Fontbonne got points at 165 and 174, freshman
Blake Johnson righted the ship with a dominant 19-2 tech fall over Stephen Bell.
The forfeits at 197 and 285 provided a final score of 42-6 in favor of the Navy and White.
In exhibition action, Davis got his second victory of the evening by easily dispatching his opponent at 125, supplying the quickest pin of the night after 1:42.
Up next for MBU Wrestling is the Spartan Invite this Saturday. MoBap will host 11 other institutions in a tournament that will commence at 9:00 a.m. at the Carl & Deloris Petty SRC at MBU.
