ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball maintained the top spot in the American Midwest Conference standings with a 3-1 road win over Stephens College on Tuesday night. The Spartans were led by 21 kills and five blocks from
Gabi Jakubowska and nine combined blocks between
Kirsten van der Vleuten and
Kassie Lee.

MBU trailed 13-10 midway through the opening set when a 4-0 run fueled by kills from van der Vleuten and Jakubowska pushed them out in front 14-13. Stephens continued to battle the Spartans and found a 22-20 advantage. Jakubowska sent down another kill and assisted on two of the next three consecutive blocks to jolt her team in front 24-22. The junior from Katowice, Poland, promptly ended the set 25-23 after Izzy Benson pulled the Stars within one with a kill on the prior play.
After hitting .176 with seven errors in the opening set, the Spartans continued to struggle in the second. They made nine errors on 43 attacks in a 25-20 loss for a .093 percentage.
Set three was also a back-and-fourth affair, as MBU did not find separation until a 4-0 stretch that put them up 24-18. Stephens battled back with three straight, but Lee took a feed from
Maiana Coelho to end the set. Jakubowska and
Fernanda Perini paired up for eight kills in the frame as the team improved to a .222 percentage.
On the brink of a four-set win, the Spartans took care of business in the fourth and final set. The team hit .500 with 13 kills on 22 attacks, led by six more from Jakubowska, who ended the day with 21, and two aces from
Julia Pereira that fueled two separate runs.
Defensively, Pereira and Jakubowska led the way with 16 digs and five total blocks, respectively. van der Vleuten tied her teammate with five blocks in the match, while Lee trailed by one with four.
