WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Missouri Baptist University men's soccer staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Williams Baptist University 3-2, overcoming an early two-goal deficit.
"The lads played like poet warriors today," head coach Jake Alvernia said. "We were a little unfortunate with some of our chances, but we fought hard a man down to come back against a really good team. Well-deserved three points. In a game where a team would be happy with a point, the guys said at halftime they wanted three."The win marks the Spartans' sixth victory of the season and second in conference play.
Led by two goals from Marko Dordevic and a late game-winner from Edvin Mahmutovic, MBU rallied back after falling behind 2-0 to secure its second straight victory.
Despite being outshot 24-12 by the Eagles, MBU capitalized on its chances, converting three of its six shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Pawel Wolny was a standout for the Spartans, making 11 saves and earning his third win of the season.
Williams Baptist took control early, scoring twice in the first 26 minutes. However, Dordevic trimmed the deficit for the Spartans in the 41st minute, narrowing the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.
After the break, Dordevic found the back of the net again in the 66th minute, leveling the match at 2-2. The junior's second goal of the game was his 10th of the season.
With momentum shifting, Mahmutovic delivered the decisive blow in the 77th minute, slotting home his third goal of the season to complete the Spartans' comeback and secure a 3-2 victory.
MBU (6-5) returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 10, against the University of Jamestown at Spartan Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
