ST. LOUIS - No. 2 seed Missouri Baptist University men's soccer prevailed in a penalty shootout, 4-2, to end No. 3 seed Williams Baptist College's season late Saturday evening, advancing to the AMC Tournament Championship game.
With the result, MBU will host rival Columbia College at Spartan Field on Tuesday evening for the title.
Both sides remained scoreless through 90 minutes of play and two 10-minute extra time halves before going to a shootout.
The match was decided in penalties, with Ognjen Bozovic delivering the game-winning kick to secure the Spartans' victory. Marko Dordevic, Emilio Hernandez, and Mattia Visintainer also converted their penalty kicks before Bozovic's clincher.
"Tonight's game had a little of everything. It was like two heavyweights going at it," said MBU head coach Jake Alvernia. "I'm very proud of the effort tonight. The boys were resilient, and now we'll regroup, rest, and get ready to host Columbia Tuesday."
Throughout the game, WBU outshot the Spartans 14-10, and a total of 40 fouls were called, with 21 on MBU.
Goalkeeper Pawel Wolny made four saves, including a crucial stop during the penalty shootout, to help the Spartans advance to the championship.
