COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri Baptist University's 2024 women's soccer season ended with a 1-0 American Midwest Conference Championship loss to (8) Columbia College.
Missouri Baptist put forth all their effort, but the nationally ranked Cougars proved to be relentless in the midfield.
Other teams in the AMC did not fair so well against CC. The Spartans held the team that averaged 4.37 goals a game to a single goal. Senior goalkeeper
Gabby Mattli stood on her head, recording 12 saves throughout the match. She commanded the defense, fighting CC until the very last minute of the game.
Defenders
Ellie Mollish and
Kacey Watson each made a couple of blocks that slowed down the Cougars. Midfielders
Emma Selsor and
Natalie Gum made valiant attempts at transitioning the ball up the field, but CC's defense stood strong.
Although the Spartans played on defense for most of the match, they attempted to score almost every time the ball touched Columbia's half of the field.
Junior defender
Piper Brown made two shot attempts, one being on goal. Midfielder
Paige Rice and forward
Rachael Beer also tried to get MBU on the scoreboard.
Mattli,
Leah Maxvill,
Skylar Hollingshead,
Abby Layton,
Madilynn Lombardo, and
Mara George played their hearts out in the last game of their soccer careers.
MBU ends the season with a 9-9-1 record overall, seven all-conference players, and a run at the AMC Championship title for the first time since 2019.
They return in the fall of 2025 as Heart of America Conference members, ready to start a new chapter for the MBU women's soccer program.
