NEVADA, MO. - In the AMC Season Opener the Spartans traveled to Cottey College, and the Comets came out firing, gaining a 12 point lead in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 61-47 victory over Missouri Baptist University.

The early parts of the contest contained some pretty back and forth action, but towards the end of the first quarter the Comets went on a 12-1 run to make it a 23-11 game heading into the second frame.

In the second quarter the Spartans brought their deficit to just seven points with under four minutes left, but Cottey was able to extend their lead to 15 before the end of the half with the score at 40-25.

The third quarter did not go well for the Spartans as they only tallied five points, forcing them to head into the final 10 minutes of play down by 23.

Missouri Baptist was able to win the fourth quarter, but unfortunately did not have enough time to keep scratching away at the Cottey lead and dropped the first AMC matchup of the season 61-47.

Sophia Horton had a great night for the Spartans as she dropped 22 points and shot 50 percent from the field.

Cottey had a solid night on the offensive end as they shot over 30 percent from the field and from beyond the arc.
