Spartans Soar Past Stars in AMC Quarterfinals

ST. LOUIS - In an electric quarterfinals match, Missouri Baptist University Women's Soccer defeated Stephens College 3-1 (Nov. 8) to advance to the American Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals, which will be held on Monday (Nov. 11).

MBU set the tone early, scoring a goal just eight minutes and thirty-nine seconds into the game. This was fifth year senior Mara George's first goal of the year, assisted by AMC Second Team All-Conference defender Piper Brown.

After drawing first blood, the Spartans pressed the Stars' defense the rest of the match. They were able to keep the ball in Stephens' territory for a large portion of the game, only allowing two shots on MBU's goal. First Team All-Conference goalkeeper, Gabby Mattli, managed to save one of the goals for a .500 save percentage.

Towards the end of the first half, offensive weapon Natalie Gum scored her first goal of the season after coming off an injury that took her out of a few games. She was assisted by senior midfielder Leah Maxvill

Just four minutes into the second half, Gum scored her second goal of the season, assisted by sophomore AnnaRose Eldred and Brown. Although the Stars scored later in the half, Gum's goal had already put the nail in the coffin.

Other notable players:

#3 Kacey Watson - three shots on goal

#12 Paige Rice - two shots on goal

The Spartans will play again on Monday against the Owls of William Woods University in the semifinal game of the AMC tournament at 7 p.m. on Spartan Field.
