Top 10 Matchup Goes Spartans’ Way

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - On the road at (8) Marian University, MBU got a lead in the first half and never looked back as they beat the Knights 14-7.

 

Early in the game the Spartans fell behind 1-0 that came in the first three minutes, and Marian tacked on another goal with just under five minutes left in the quarter.

 

With 3:12 left in the opening quarter Delaney Pechnik got the Spartans on the scoreboard making it 2-1, and shortly after Kiersten Lang tied it up and Pechnik put them on top with another goal just 27 seconds after Lang's.

 

The Knights were able to score another goal before the second quarter as they two top 10 opponents went into the second frame tied at three apiece.

 

The second quarter gave MBU their lead as they scored three unanswered goals before halftime as Lydia Cornett, KJ Bonenberger, and Caroline Karr all scored.

 

Amelia Shaw made five saves in the first half to help keep the Knights at bay.

 

Karr opened up the second half with a man down goal in the first minute of the third quarter.

 

Marian was able to net two goals after Karr's to make it 7-5.

 

The Spartans were able to answer Marian's pair of goals with a trio of their own coming from Bonenberger, Karr, and Skyler Morrissey to make it 10-5.

 

The two foes went into the final 15 minutes with a score of 10-6 as Marian got one more in the third.

 

Missouri Baptist outscored Marian 4-1 in the final quarter to go onto a 14-7 victory.

 

Pechnik, Lydia Cornett, Mackaylee Miller, and Karr were the goal scorers for MBU in the fourth quarter.

 

Shaw finished the game with seven saves making that 28 on the season.

 

Karr led the Spartans in goals with four along with one assist, Pechnik had three goals, and Cornett and Bonenberger each had two goals.

 

Cornett had four assists throughout the day leading to six points in the game.

 

The Spartans were 17-18 on clear attempts and only allowed two free position shots.

 

The win puts MBU at 3-0 on the season and they will return to the field Saturday at 11:00 am at (RV) Indiana Tech.
