MARTIN, Tenn. – In its toughest stretch yet, the Missouri Baptist University STUNT program ended with a 2-2 record at the two-day University of Tennessee at Martin Tournament. The Spartans dropped both contests to Ashland University but picked up a 14-0 shutout of Southern Arkansas University on Day One and a narrow 14-13 win over UT Martin.
Kicking off the tournament, two-time STUNT All-American
Kylie Lamb and senior
Sophia Welch led the Spartans over Southern Arkansas with power ratings of 26 points apiece. In addition to setting a program-record six straight wins, they also executed and scored on Partner Stunt 7 for the first time this season.
The perfect start to the season was ended by No. 5-ranked Ashland University (Ohio) as the Eagles defeated MBU, 17-9. The Spartans executed Partner Stunt 7 for the second straight game and earned a point. All four athletes – Lamb, Welch,
Kiley Roth, and
Vashti Altheide – participating in Partner Stunt 7 earned the highest power rating of the game with 23 points.
Playing Ashland back-to-back, but on Day Two, the Spartans upped their score by one and saw AU's score shrink by two points in a closer 15-10 loss. Six Spartans tied for the highest power rating of 20 points, including Welch, Roth, Altheide,
CiCi Mallqui-Thomas,
Emilia Ealick, and
London Joy.
MoBap built an early lead over UT-Martin in the tournament finale and carried it into the final quarter. The Spartans held off a late push by the No. 3-ranked team in D1, taking a four-point lead into the final round of quarter four with only three possible points available. For the third game in a row,
Kiley Roth was the top point-getter with a power rating of 30 points.
The Spartans sport a 7-2 overall record heading into their home tournament on March 22-23. Friday is promoted as a WHITE OUT event, while Saturday is CODE BLUE. The Spartans will play a division and conference game versus Central Methodist on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a division game against Missouri Valley at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Spartans will celebrate Senior Day versus Southwest Baptist at 4 p.m., honoring
