Softball Splits on Final Days of Space Coast Games

Melbourne, Fla.- The Spartans wrapped up the USSSA Space Coast Games on Friday (March 15). They were unable to hold onto their undefeated status but still left the Sunshine State with a solid record of 6-2. They started off the later half of the Space Coast Games against MidAmerica Nazarene, a team they will be facing once again this Tuesday (March 19). The same day they took on Indiana Tech where they suffered their first loss of the break. The next day MBU took on Aquinas and University of NW Ohio, earning another split on the day.

Game One vs. MidAmerica Nazarene University
MBU was making it on base early against MNU but couldn't put anything on the board until the fifth inning. They left a total of six runners stranded in the first hour innings. On the other side of things, they weren't making it easy for the Pioneers. Brooklynn Fischer struck out the very first three batters for a quick first inning. The second inning would be three up, three down as well.

The Spartans would continue to make it on base and finally put up the run needed for the win in the fifth inning. Meghan Hager would make it in due to an error by the third baseman and would continue to be moved around the bases by the next few batters. Abagail Cafolla would be the one to bring her in when the sophomore would step up and hit a single out to center field to bring Hager home. The rest of the game would continue much the same as the first four innings, with neither team adding a run. The clutch hit from Ab. Cafolla would earn the Spartans their first win of the day.

Game Two vs. Indiana Tech
MNU would be their only win on the day as the Spartans fell to Indiana Tech that afternoon. The Spartans were doing a good job of holding off the Warriors for the first three innings, giving up only two hits and no runs. In the fourth the Warriors got a jump on MBU, putting up five runs in the inning. The Spartans didn't back down as they soon scored runs of their own.

In the bottom of the fourth, Allison Leigraf had a big hit out to left field, making her way to second base. After moving around to third, the sophomore was brought in when Miranda Ladson had a base hit out to left field, earning the RBI. It didn't stop there as Ladson was brought in herself when Natalie Archer hit a double out to left field. Despite MBU getting back in the game, cutting down the Warriors lead, they couldn't overcome the difference. Indiana Tech soon brought in three more runs, and the Spartans lost to the Warriors, 8-2.

Game Three vs. Aquinas College
Friday (March 15) morning MBU took on the Saints for their second to last matchup of the USSSA Space Coast Games. The Spartans started off hot putting up four runs during their first at bat of the game. Hager started off the game with a base hit to third. Ladson followed up with a double put to left field to bring in her fellow sophomore for the first run of the game. Archer then moved her around with a single out to left field. With runners at first and third, Leigraf stepped up to the plate and hit a double out to left to bring in both Ladson and Archer. Leigraf went on to score herself while the defense was occupied, making it home before the Warriors caught a runner stealing.

The next few innings would go by scoreless until Aquinas would score their first and only run of the game. The Spartans would add another run in the top of the seventh when Amber Cage, who pinch ran for Ladson, would make it to third on a base hit by Fischer out to right field. The sophomore would take advantage of an error by the right fielder, making it home to score the Spartans fifth and final run of the game. MBU came out of top against AQ, 5-1.

Game Four vs. University of Northwestern Ohio
MBU was able to take an early lead, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Hager, who had just stolen third, made it home on a passed ball. UNOH would even it up in the top of the third, but it wouldn't be long to MBU would gain back the lead. In the bottom of the same inning, Fischer would reach first on a fielder's choice by the second baseman. Ab. Cafolla would proceed to launch a ball out to centerfield to bring in Fischer.

The Racers would once again tie it back up in the fifth which would ultimately send the game into extra innings. UNOH managed to score a run in the top of the eighth, but a sacrifice fly from Ladson would score Cage for the tying run. The game would end in the ninth when the Racers were able to bring home a run while MBU was unable to answer. The Spartans dropped the final game of spring break to the Racers, 4-3.

After returning back to St. Louis, the Spartans will have a quick turn around as they head to Olathe, Kan. Where they will be going up against MidAmerica Nazarene once again. They will be taking on the Pioneers for a double header on March 19 starting at 2 PM.
