SAINT LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University Spartans wasted little time in exerting their offensive prowess on Monday as they banged out 22 hits in a 22-0 win over Hannibal-LaGrange University. They did so with many of the usual suspects but mixed in some new faces for good measure.
Blayne Yarger hit a pair of two run homers in the first two innings. His second blast of the day was part of a 12 run second inning from the Spartans which effectively ended the game early, although five more innings were played. Spartan starter
Jackson Wells made sure the runs stood up, as he was nothing short of brilliant with a complete-game, three-hit shutout. His record now stands at 4-1 on the season.
Also adding to the home run parade were
Alex Adams,
Jayden Orozco, and
DJ Schmidt. The round-tripper for Orozco was his sixth of the season, and he has now homered in five of his last six games. Schmidt came in as a defensive replacement in the top of the fourth inning then took advantage of the opportunity by launching his first home run of the season, of the three-run variety, in the bottom of the inning.
Schmidt was not the only one who took advantage of his name being in the lineup. Seldom used of late, designated hitter
Lucas Lefebvre had four hits in five at-bats on Monday while scoring two runs and driving in three.
Blane Besse and
Cole Robinson both collected three hits. Wells fanned three and walked two in the victory.
No rest for the Spartans though. They will make an up-and-back trip to Parkville, Mo. to face the Park University Pirates on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
