Spartans Winning Streak Hits Nine with Two Shutouts of HSSU

SAINT LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University Baseball team showed no signs of slowing down as they blanked Harris-Stowe State University twice on Friday, 15-0 and 12-0 at Spartan Baseball Field.

GAME ONE: MBU 15, HSSU 12
Spartans starting pitcher Teague Robertson threw six strong innings and the Spartans' bats supplied more than enough offense for a big win in the first game on Friday.

Cole Robinson, Cameron Roll, and Alex Adams all collected two hits in the victory, with Adams leading the way with four RBIs. All four of those RBIs were the result of a fifth inning grand slam. The home run briefly tied him for the team lead in that category with 10.

The Spartans took until the third inning to really find their stride, but it proved to be one of two innings in which they at least five runs. Ten men came to the plate for MBU in the third as they scored the game's first five runs, with the big hit being a Robinson double scoring Adams and Blayne Yarger.

MBU scored eight more runs in the fifth inning, by banging out five hits and benefiting from four walks and an error. Adams' grand slam was the biggest offensive contribution to the frame. Playing as the visitor on their home field, the Spartans led 13-0 after four and a half innings.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the top of the sixth when Yarger grounded into a fielder's choice scoring pinch-runner DJ Schmidt, then later scored the final run of the game on a Robinson single.

Robertson scattered four hits through his six innings, while walking two Hornets and striking out six. Earning the victory, he now boasts a 4-0 record on the season.

GAME TWO: MBU 12, HSSU 0
In the second game of the day, it was Landon Albers' opportunity to throw a gem. The sophomore from Breese, Ill. pitched five and two thirds of hitless baseball before surrendering his first and only hit with two outs in the sixth. By that time, he had already struck out seven Hornets and walked just one.

Joe Schmidt continued his hot hitting of late by going three for four at the plate with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored. He has now raised his average 93 points in the last three games, in which he is seven for 11. The home run was just his second of the season.

Five other Spartans collected two hits, including Alex Adams, Cole Robinson, Jayden Orozco, DJ Schmidt, and Cesar Soto. The loudest hit of the game belonged to Robinson who connected on a home run that may have still been ascending when it flew over the left field fence. The blast is the eleventh of the season for Robinson, to regain the team lead in that category. The Saint Louis native also leads the club in batting average at .435.

The Spartans offense was held in check for the first two innings, then scored in every inning thereafter until once again the "run rule" was invoked due to the advantage being more than 10 runs after seven innings. This marks the fifth consecutive instance the Spartans have ended a nine-inning game early.

The current nine game winning streak is the longest of the season and the longest since a pair of 11 game streaks the Spartans put together a year ago.

The Spartans and Hornets will match up on more time at Spartan Baseball Field on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
