ST. LOUIS - In the KCAC Championship Finals the Spartans posted an 18-6 victory over Ottawa and claimed a spot in the NAIA National Tournament.
Â
MBU got the party started by gaining a 3-0 lead in the first quarter coming off of goals from Lydia Cornett, Caroline Karr, and Natalie Patrick.
Â
The Braves of Ottawa responded as they tallied back to back goals to make it 3-2.
Â
The same trio for the Spartans notched another goal for the Spartans to make it 6-2, and Karr got her third of the afternoon to give MBU a five goal lead heading into the second quarter.
Â
Ottawa got the first goal of the second frame, but with eight minutes remaining Skyler Morrissey got it back to regain their five goal lead.
Â
The Spartans turned it up with under six minutes remaining as Cornett put the ball in the back of the net on a man up opportunity and so did Karr after Kiersten Lang had made it 10-3.
Â
Before halftime Lang and Cornett each got one more to make it 13-3 at the break.
Â
Amelia Shaw made six saves in the first half to help keep Ottawa to just three goals.
Â
The third quarter was a little slower for MBU as they only scored a pair of goals from Cornett and Karr, but the Spartans held a 12 goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action with a running clock.
Â
The fourth quarter went back and forth as Ottawa scored the first goal, but KJ Bonenberger responded with a goal of her own.
Â
The same thing occurred a few minutes later, but this time Morrissey got the goal for MBU, and not too long after Morrissey did it again following a Braves' goal to clinch MBU's victory in the KCAC Championship Finals 18-6.
Â
Karr and Cornett each finished the game with five goals, and Karr had eight points with three assists.
Â
Cornett won six draw controls for the Spartans and Patrick reeled in six ground balls throughout the contest.
Â
Between the pipes Shaw made 11 saves holding the Braves to just six goals in the contest and just five while she was in.
Â
Morrissey did a little bit of everything for the Spartans on the offensive end as she scored three goals, had three assists, and won multiple chases throughout the game.
Â
The victory gives MBU a place in the NAIA National Tournament in Savannah, Ga. with an automatic bid as the KCAC Tournament winner.
