Spartans Triumph in Eight, Stumble in Seven for Split With CBC

Conway, Ark.- The Spartans had a short trip to Conway as they took on Central Baptist College for their second doubleheader in a row. They were going up against the only remaining undefeated team in the AMC after MBU and Williams Baptist split the previous day. MBU served up CBC's first AMC loss, defeating them in eight innings 3-2. After battling it out in game two, MBU was unable to come away with their second win of the day.

GAME ONE
The first few innings would go by with both teams struggling to get on base. Brooklynn Fischer was back in the circle for the Spartans and struck out seven batters in just the first three innings. The Mustangs did make it on the board in the fourth with a homer for the first run of the game. MBU answered back in the top of the fifth when Amber Cage hit a single out to the right fielder to bring in Jenna Achs to put the Spartans on the board. Meghan Hager followed up with a big hit over the left fielder and slid in under the tag at third for a triple. Kolby Brake was easily able to make it home on the play, putting the Spartans up 2-1.

The rest of the game was going by fast with multiple three-up three-down innings. The Spartans were able to hold on to their lead until the bottom of the seventh when the lead off batter for CBC sent one over the fence to tie the game. Going into the eight innings, the Spartans refused to let this one go. After the lead off batter was out, Hager made it on with a ground ball up the middle out to center field. Hager then stole second during the next at bat and a couple pitches later Miranda Ladson joined her on base. Ladson hit a ground ball to the short stop who earned the error off of a bad throw to first. Fischer then loaded the bases after watching four straight balls go by for a walk. Abagail Cafolla then stepped up to the plate and after watching the first pitch for a strike, the sophomore hit one through the left side to bring home Hager for the game winning run. The Mustangs were able to get a couple runners on base, but MBU was able to shut down the rest of the batters to secure the win.

With the victory over CBC Fischer made her way back into the win column, striking out a season high of 12 batters.

GAME TWO
Hager made it on early for the Spartans, securing first due to an error by the short stop and was able to continue on to second when the ball went out of play because of the throw. Ladson was up next and hit a line drive right past the pitch and into the outfield. With runners at first and third Fischer stepped into the batter's box. The sophomore hit a fly ball out to center when the defenseman made the catch. After the first baseman made the cut off, she attempted to throw out Ladson at second. With the throw out of reach of the short stop, Hager took the opportunity to make it home safely for the first run of the game.

After putting up a run in the top of the first, the Spartans had some ground to cover when CBC brought home three with a home run. The next few innings would be a fight to make up the difference, but CBC was there to shut down any opportunities that MBU would gain. In turn, Alexandria Cafolla was working hard in the circle to prevent CBC from picking up any more runs. Allison Leigraf would bring it to a one run ball game when she hit a lead off home run in the top of the fifth, bringing the score 3-2, CBC.

The Mustangs picked up a couple more runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Spartans went into the seventh needing to pick up two more runs to stay alive. Leigraf would once again lead off for the Spartans and smokes the ball in almost the exact same spot for her second home run of the game. Unfortunately with the next three batters sat down, MBU was unable to bridge the gap to pull out their second win of the day. The game ended with CBC on top 5-3. This would end Al. Cafolla's six game win streak, bringing her record to 8-6.

Up next, MBU will be taking a short break from conference play to take on Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, March 10 down in Marshall, Mo.
