Spartans Stumble in Conference Tournament with Back-to-Back Losses

Columbia, Mo.- The Spartans went into day two of the conference tournament after a win 6-0 over UHSP. The Spartans first matchup was against Cottey, whom they swept earlier in the season. The Spartans just couldn't connect and ended up losing to the Comets 3-0. MBU immediately turned around and went up against Williams Baptist where they were unable to stay alive and lost to the Eagles, 3-1.

GAME ONE VS COTTEY
The Spartans struggled to make contact, with MBU earning only two hits in the game. The first hit came for the Spartans in the top of the first when Jenna Achs hit a single out to center field to make it on base.

MBU was able to keep Cottey off the board until they got things going with a home run in the bottom of the second. The Comets were able to put up another two runs in the bottom of the third to bring it 3-0, Cottey. Fischer was able to make it on base with a walk in the next inning but was left stranded after the next three Spartans were unable to make it through the defense.

In an attempt to shake things up, Alexandria Cafolla came in for Fischer in the circle and was able to shut out the Comets for the rest of the game, giving up only three hits.

MBU put up their last hit in the top of the fifth inning when Natalie Archer had a double out to left field. Archer was able to make her way to third on the next play, with Kolby Brake moving her around, and ending the inning only sixty feet from putting the Spartans on the board.

The next few innings went by fast with the Spartan unable to recover, dropping their first game of the conference tournament, 3-0.

GAME TWO VS WBU
The Spartans second game went a lot like the first with them struggling to put up runs. MBU did put up a few more hits this go around, notching five in the game.
MBU and Cottey were neck and neck, with both fighting for that first run. The Spartans made it on base a couple times with line drives coming from Abagail Cafolla and Allison Leigraf but both were left stranded. Cottey pulled away in the bottom of the third when they put up two runs in a row off of a few well-placed hits.

Once again MBU switched up their pitching with Fischer coming in for Al. Cafolla this time around. The Spartans were able to hold off the Eagles until the bottom of the fifth when an Eagle hit a sac fly off of Taylor Whitehead who had just stepped into the circle for MBU.

It was the seventh inning when the Spartans were able to make it onto the board. Ab. Cafolla was back with another line drive to start off the inning, making her way to second base. Achs then grounded out to the pitcher but was able to move Ab. Cafolla around to third. Leigraf then stepped up and popped up to the second baseman, allowing Ab. Cafolla to take off towards home, putting up the first and only run of the game. After that Miranda Ladson was able to make it on base with a single down the left field line but the last out of the game soon followed and MBU was out of the tournament.

The Spartans may be out of the conference tournament, but their season isn't over yet. MBU will be heading to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, starting on May 13.
