Spartans Lose a Pair to Open Keiser University Tournament

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The 11th-ranked Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Friday against (RV) Columbia International University and the University of the Cumberlands to open the Keiser University Vipers Sports Academy Classic.

Down 4-2 in set one, Elina Arsov sent down a kill and followed it up with her first of three service aces in the match. Three plays later, a kill from Kassie Lee off an assist from freshman setter Tiia Heikkinen started a string of five consecutive points to put MBU up 10-7.

Lee started another streak with a kill to make it 11-8. Jakubowska served up an ace two plays later and a kill from Arsov, along with a pair of attack errors, gave the Spartans a 16-9 set one lead. CIU pulled within three at 21-18 later in the set, but the Spartans did not let frame one slip away and ended it at 25-18 on three kills from Arsov.

Milica Radicevic started set two off with a kill before a pair of Heikkinen aces. The Rams went on a 5-0 run to take the lead and Arsov stopped the bleeding with an ace after receiving the ball from a CIU service error.

Down 13-11, the Spartans rattled off five straight and took 10 of the next 11 points. Natalie Edson's ace eventually ended a late Rams comeback with a 25-21 score to put MBU up 2-0.

CIU responded in the next two frames with narrow victories, taking set three 25-23 and set four 28-26. The Rams cleaned up their game and saw their hitting percentage rise from .000 in set two to .270 in set three and .220 in set four.

MBU opened set five trailing 6-4. Jakubowska helped snatch the lead back by starting a 4-0 run and had the teams switching sides with an 8-6 Spartan lead.

Hadassah Davis' 15th kill of the match pulled the Rams within one and Katie Camp tied the game at nine with another kill. A service ace from Kamelia De Jesus put CIU ahead and they never looked back, finishing the reverse sweep with a 15-10 fifth-set victory.

Cumberlands Recap
The Spartans started game two on Friday by jumping out to a 6-3 lead over The Cumberlands in set one behind a pair of kills from Tayler Neal and one from Kirsten van der Vleuten. Neal and Jakubowska both had eight kills in the first set, forcing a tie at 23-23.

A Spartan service error put the Patriots back in the driver's seat, but Heikkinen set up Arsov perfectly to tie the game at 24. Another MBU service error put the team on the brink, and Allyson Grava's seventh kill ended the game to give The Cumberlands a 1-0 advantage.

Arsov took things over early in set two, tallying four kills in the first eight plays as her team took a 9-1 lead. The Patriots continued to battle back and knotted the game at 18 all. The two teams traded points until a pair of attack errors from MBU put the momentum in favor of UC, who finished the set off 25-22.

The Spartans ran out to another early lead at 6-3 with their backs against the wall but could not find separation. A service error pulled the Patriots even at nine and started a run that put them out in front 13-9. They carried the energy through the remainder of the set and went on to take eight of the final 10 points to finish up a 25-18 victory in the set and a 3-0 sweep.
