Costa Mesa, Calif. — Missouri Baptist University men's soccer upset No. 15 Westcliff University 4-1 on Saturday evening for its first victory of the season, led by two goals from sophomore Sergej Misic to open the year with a top-25 win.
The Spartans outshot the Warriors 16-10 throughout the match. Despite trailing 1-0 in the fourth minute, MBU scored four straight goals to secure the upset victory.
The match was physical, with Westcliff committing 19 fouls and MBU six. Five yellow cards were issued to the Spartans, while Westcliff received one.
"Westcliff is a tough side," said head coach Jake Alvernia. "I didn't think we started too well, but we grew into the game and were able to level it before the half. In the second half, the boys were brilliant. They raised the level. Now we have to regroup and get ready for another tough match with Hope International on Monday."
Misic earned man of the match honors with his two goals and one assist.
Westcliff jumped ahead early, but Misic's goal in the 37th minute sent the teams into halftime tied 1-1. In the second half, Misic netted the go-ahead and game-winning goal in the 69th minute before goals from Edvin Mahmutovic and Ognjen Bozovic extended the Spartans' lead to 4-1, clinching the victory for MBU.
The Spartans' last victory over a ranked opponent came against No. 12 Columbia College last season, with MBU winning 2-0 in September. The Spartans return to the pitch on Monday against Hope International University in Irvine, Calif., at 12 p.m. PDT.
