ST. LOUIS - With hopes of picking up their third win of the season Missouri Baptist University got out to a hot start and never looked back taking down William Woods 66-7.
Following a three-and-out forced by the defense on the Owls' first drive,
Jordan Simpson dropped back and found
Shane Becker down the field who made an amazing catch for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage for MBU. Just a handful of plays later the Spartans had the ball back, and this time Simpson hit Becker again for another touchdown from 27 yards out to make it 14-0.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard twice more in the first quarter as
Jonah Cox nailed a 50-yarder to give MBU a three-score lead.
Jared Steward also found the endzone on a four-yard rush giving the Spartans a 24-0 lead at the end of the first frame.
Following a turnover of downs towards the end of the first quarter, Missouri Baptist got the ball at the WWU 21-yard line and two plays later
Lionel Banks scampered into paydirt from 19 yards out. The next William Woods drive was a three-and-out, and the Spartans reached the endzone again on a 10-play 55-yard drive capped off by another Becker touchdown for his third on the day making it 38-0.
The Owls scored a touchdown with 5:54 left in the first half, and the Spartans responded quickly marching the ball 73 yards on just seven plays as this time
Joseph White crossed the goal line to make it 45-7. Missouri Baptist got the ball back in with little time remaining in the first half in great field position following a turnover on downs and punched the ball in on a pass to
Julian Williams for an 11-yard touchdown.
The Spartans held a 52-7 lead at the halftime break when the Spartans honored alumni in attendance for the 10th anniversary of the program.
Banks opened up the second half on the first play from scrimmage sprinting 75 yards for a touchdown to put the Spartans up by 52. The Spartans were the last to get on the scoreboard in the contest when
Jordan Kern powered his way across the goal line.
Both sides could keep each other out of the endzone for the remainder of the contest as Missouri Baptist would win 66-7.
Simpson's final line was 9-15 for 193 and five touchdown passes. Becker caught five passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns. Banks averaged 9.3 yards per carry on 19 attempts, 177 yards, and two touchdowns.
The Spartans showcased a handful of defensive players throughout the contest as five players tallied four total tackles.
Zeppelin Velder picked up an interception in the first half leading to a Spartan touchdown.
Following the win the Spartans improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in Heart of America conference play, and will hit the road as they take on Central Methodist in Fayette, Mo. at 1:00 p.m.
