Spartans Hit .352 but Lose in Straight Sets to Maryville

ST. LOUIS – No. 17 Missouri Baptist University was swept on the road in the Conway Clash by Maryville University on Wednesday night. The Spartans dropped their second consecutive match, losing 17-25, 17-25, 24-26.

Gabi Jakubowska led the way for MBU with 15 kills on 26 attacks for a .429 percentage. Allana Capella chipped in eight kills and a .353 percentage while the reigning conference defender of the week, Fernanda Perini, showed out on offense with a .625 efficiency, including six kills. Freshman Nina Cillo quarterbacked the attack with 34 assists, a career-high, in her second career start.

Overall, the Spartans hit .352 as a team with 42 kills on 91 attacks.

The Saints opened the match with a set one victory, hitting .333 with 15 kills and five aces. The Spartans hit .323, led by five kills on seven attempts from Jakubowska, but fell 17-25.

Maryville continued its offensive dominance in the second set with a commanding 25-17 victory on a .480 hitting percentage and four more aces behind the line. Jakubowska was the main point of emphasis on an MBU attack that hit .267 in the frame, with 11 kills and a .450 percentage.

The sweep concluded in a closely contested third set, 24-26. The Spartans hit .467, but were matched by a .419 percentage from the Saints, including four blocks.

Heart of America Athletic Conference play continues for MBU on Friday, Oct. 3, in a 7 p.m. start in Marshall, Mo., against Missouri Valley College.
