WICHITA, Kan.- The Missouri Baptist University men's wrestling team competed well at the Falcon Open hosted by Friends University. Several Spartans finish the day with a positive record in on of the toughest tournaments in the country.
Daryl Mills was the lone placer for the Spartans, as he finished third at 141 pounds. Mills blazed to the quarterfinals with back-to-back technical falls and then claimed a ranked win over the No. 25 wrestler from the host school. Mills dropped his semifinal bout but finished strong with a major decision to grab the bronze finish.
Geno Cardenas went 5-1 on the day at 125 pounds. Cardenas dropped his opening-round match, which forced him to battle through several consolation matches. Cardenas captured five straight bonus-point victories, which included a technical fall over No. 4 Conner Heck of St. Thomas (Fla.) and No. 10 Clemente Delgado of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).
Trey Ladymon had the best finish for the Spartans in the amateur division of the tournament and finished 5-2. Ladymon captured the fall at the 2:31 mark in his first match of the day. Then Ladymon battled tough against an unattached wrestler and lost on a late takedown in the third period. Ladymon bounced back with four more wins to push him to the consolation semifinal.
Brandon Bollinger finished 3-2 at 157 pounds on the mat with a fall in his third match. Bollinger's losses both came from ranked wrestlers. Noah Richardson also went 3-2 at 157 pounds, which included falls and a major decision. Dom Benavidez went 3-2 in the amateur division at 184 pounds with three bonus point victories to round out the Spartans.
The Spartans come back home to host the No. 12 Central Methodist University Eagles in their home opener at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
