CONWAY, ARK. - On the road at Central Baptist the Spartans were looking to split the season series and held a slim lead over the Mustangs at Halftime, but the Mustangs were able to force overtime and hit a buzzer beater to pin another loss on Missouri Baptist.
The Spartans offense came to play in the first quarter as they took care of the ball, shot 50 percent from the field, and got to the charity stripe on their way to 26 points in the opening frame.
Missouri Baptist was outscored in the second quarter, but were able to maintain a one point lead over the Mustangs at the break.
Trailing by six in the fourth quarter, the Spartans started to chip away at Central Baptist's lead. They were able to regain an advantage over the Mustangs, and a free throw from Mariana Cubero gave the Spartans a two point lead with nine seconds left. The Mustangs got the ball in a good scoring area, but the Spartans picked up a foul, sending CBC to line with a chance to tie the game, and they did at 71 apiece forcing overtime.
In the final five minutes, neither team was able to gain a significant lead, but the Spartans held a two point lead with six seconds left. CBC had the ball on their end of the court and drew up a play that got a shooter open off a high ball screen beyond the arc, and the Mustangs knocked down the triple to force an 81-80 loss on the Spartans.
Despite the loss, the Spartans did a lot right throughout the contest; winning the paint battle, forcing more turnovers, out rebounding the Mustangs, and shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
Kayleigh Winch had a monster day for the Spartans finishing one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and three blocks.
