Missouri Baptist Goes Down Swinging, Benedictine Wins HAAC Tournament Championship

Atchison, KAN. – On Saturday (April 19), Missouri Baptist University Women's Lacrosse fell to second-ranked Benedictine College 24-12, losing the title of Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Champions.

MBU proved that they earned their spot in the championship, scoring more goals on BC than any other team this season, including other higher-ranked teams in the NAIA Coaches' Top Ten Poll.

Lydia Cornett, who leads the country in assists and is fourth in goal-scoring, put one on the board for the Spartans just two minutes into the contest.

In response to Cornett's goal, the leading goal-scorer in the country and HAAC Offensive Player of the Year scored her first of seven on the day for the Ravens.

BC kept scoring until HAAC Newcomer of the Year, Olivia Julian, put one in the back of the net in a woman-up situation, bringing the score to 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Benedictine scored three towards the beginning of the second period, but Cornett fired in one of her notorious free position shots to give the Spartans another point.

Cornett scored the Spartans' next two goals as well, and she assisted Alexis Taylor in the Spartans' sixth goal of the game.

At half, the Spartans were down by six. After Benedictine scored one going into the third quarter, Cornett scored another off a free position attempt
BC scored two more before Kiersten Lang put another point on the board for Missouri Baptist off an assist from Cornett.

Cornett and Marissa Oldham (assisted by Cornett) also scored goals in the third.

After BC scored the first goal of the quarter, Mack Miller scored one for the Spartans, followed by another one from Julian.

The Spartans didn't score another for the rest of the game, making the final score 24-12.

MBU had an excellent season in their first year as members of the Heart of America, ending 7-1 in the conference and producing eight all-conference selects.

They will find out if they made the NAIA National Tournament on Tuesday (April 22).
