DES MOINES, Iowa – Missouri Baptist University football fell to No. 1 Grand View University 49-17 on Saturday afternoon at Duke Williams Stadium, dropping to 1-1 on the season while the defending NAIA national champions improved to 2-0.
Jacob Jones went 17-for-31 passing for 209 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Zae Jones led the receiving corps with five catches for 65 yards and a 55-yard touchdown, while Gavin Claud added four grabs for 65 yards and a 24-yard score as time expired in the third quarter. Kicker Ian Zohner provided the Spartans' first points of the day with a 41-yard field goal early in the second half.
Defensively, Evan DeWilde led the Spartans with eight total tackles, while Brady Davis recorded Missouri Baptist's lone sack. Justin Lehn forced and recovered a fumble in the first quarter to set up a short field.
First Quarter
Grand View capitalized on an early interception to punch in a 3-yard touchdown and added two more scores — including an 81-yard strike from Jackson Waring to Aisea Toki — to take a 21-0 lead after one.
Second Quarter
The Vikings extended their lead with two more rushing touchdowns and a 25-yard scoring pass, heading into halftime ahead 42-0.
Third Quarter
MBU got on the board with Zohner's field goal to cap a 10-play, 41-yard drive. Moments later, Jones connected with Zae Jones for a 55-yard touchdown, and he later found Claud from 24 yards out as the quarter expired to trim the margin to 42-17.
Fourth Quarter
GVU tacked on one final touchdown midway through the fourth to close the scoring.
