ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In a highly anticipated showdown between the Heart's top two teams, the No. 9 Missouri Baptist Spartans emerged victorious over No. 25 Benedictine College in a thrilling four-set battle. From the opening serve, the intensity on both sides of the net set the tone for a hard-fought conference matchup.
Set one was the Katie Hunt and Alohilani Bursey show. Hunt electrified the home crowd early, shifting momentum in the Spartans' favor with four consecutive service aces to build a 9-3 lead. Bursey displayed similar dominance on the attacking end, delivering three straight kills during a 5-0 Spartan run that forced a Ravens timeout with MBU leading 17-9. Benedictine attacker Bridget O'Sullivan attempted to spark a late comeback, recording eight kills in the set, but her efforts weren't enough as the Spartans held on for a narrow 25-23 victory.
Reigning Heart Attacker of the Week Fernanda Perini took control early in set two, making her presence felt on both sides of the net. The junior middle blocker tallied two kills and two blocks to ignite the crowd and propel MBU to a 6-1 advantage. The Ravens struggled to find their offensive rhythm, finishing the set with a -.030 hitting percentage. Behind Perini's six kills and three blocks, the Spartans cruised to a commanding 25-14 victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Benedictine responded in the third set, shaking off its offensive struggles and coming out firing to maintain the lead for much of the frame. Trailing 17-12, the Spartans rallied with six unanswered points to take an 18-17 advantage. Junior Abby Harder provided a valuable spark off the bench, contributing three kills and a block to keep MBU in contention. The two teams continued trading blows down the stretch, with a service ace from Martina Ligabue putting the Spartans ahead 25-24. However, Ravens outside hitter Stefania Scomazzon came alive late, recording three of her five kills in the closing stretch to help Benedictine claim its first set of the match.
Determined to put the match away, the No. 9 Spartans struck first in the fourth set. A combination of Ravens attacking errors and kills from Bursey and Harder helped MBU establish an early 8-5 advantage. The Spartans maintained their slim lead throughout the set as Benedictine continued battling to close the gap. MBU remained composed down the stretch, with a kill from Ashlynn Hughes and a Ravens attacking error helping seal the 25-19 victory and secure the four-set win.
The Spartans showcased their strength from the service line, racking up an impressive 14 aces as a team, highlighted by Hunt's four. Perini delivered another standout performance, leading MBU with 14 kills and five blocks, while Bursey followed closely with 13 kills. Freshman setter Martina Ligabue orchestrated the offense with 42 assists, while senior libero Julia Reis Pereira anchored the defense with an impressive 25 digs.
