Spartans Sweep Pioneers on the Road

OLATHE, Kan. - No. 9 Spartans begin their road trip with a victory, defending MidAmerican Nazarene University in a clean sweep. MBU's defensive dominance and attacking efficiency set them apart from the Pioneers.

Set one went down to the wire as there were 10 ties throughout. MBU started scoring for the match, with Fernanda Perini and Herdie Castillo blocking a Pioneer attack to go up 2-0 early. MidAmerican Nazarene responded quickly, tying it up and eventually taking the lead halfway through the set, 15-12. After a timeout, Missouri Baptist responds with a 10-2 run to retake the lead by stout defensive rejections from the entire front row, up 22-17. The Pioneers wouldn't go away, though, fighting back to tie it up 24 a piece. The two teams continue to go back and forth, with it still being tied at 27. Back-to-back Ashlynn Hughes kills give the Spartans the first set win, 27-25.

The back-and-forth affair continues to start set two, with both teams trading blows, tied 11 apiece early. No. 9 Spartans begin to slowly separate with a 4-0 run led by kills from Perini and Castillo, forcing the Pioneers to call a timeout. The break seemed ineffective as MBU continued to pull away, with a Martina Ligubue kill finalizing a set two win, 25-19.

The Pioneers struggled with their attacks in the third set, finishing with a -.231 attacking percentage. The Spartans took advantage, quickly building a lead, while being efficient enough on their end with a .173 attacking percentage. MBU held the Pioneers to single digits in points in the final set, capping off the win with kills from Alohilani Bursey and Castillo.

The Spartans ended with 11 blocks, compared to only four from the Pioneers. Bursey led the way with eight kills, while Hughes ended with six blocks. Nina Cillo delivered three service aces, and Julia Reis Pereina ended with 12 digs, leaving her just shy of the 2,000-dig mark.

The Spartans are back at it tomorrow with a road match against Park University.
