ST. LOUIS — Missouri Baptist University men's tennis remained unbeaten Saturday evening, earning a 5–2 home victory over #22 ranked Marian University at Vetta West Racquet Club in St. Louis.
The win improves the Spartans to 5–0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1–2.
"I feel like our match last week against Quincy really prepared us for this one," said head coach Scott Goodyear. "We had to fight for every match last week, and that experience showed tonight. Being down at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, we didn't panic — we just kept competing. Winning the doubles point gave us a lot of momentum going into singles, and the guys were able to lock in and play well against a very tough Marian team."
Missouri Baptist claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches, rallying in both victories. At No. 1, Luca Ebenriter and Sebastian Junghanns erased a 5–4 deficit to secure a 7–5 win. Ruslan Anurev and Strahinja Radanovic followed suit at No. 2, battling back from down 5–3 to win 7–5 and clinch the doubles point for the Spartans. Marian took the No. 3 doubles match, but MBU carried a 1–0 lead into singles play.
That momentum carried into singles competition, where Missouri Baptist's top four were in control from the outset. Ebenriter earned a 6–4, 6–3 win at No. 1, and Junghanns followed with a 6–2, 6–1 victory at No. 2.
Radanovic added a 6–3, 6–1 triumph at No. 3, while Anurev completed the scoring with a 6–3, 6–4 win at No. 4. Marian picked up points at No. 5 and No. 6.
Missouri Baptist returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21, hosting Missouri Valley College at 6:30 p.m. in a Heart Conference matchup at Vetta West Racquet Club.
