ST. LOUIS — Missouri Baptist University men's and women's tennis split a pair of matches against Goshen on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
The Spartan men rallied for a 4–3 victory over the Maple Leafs, while the Missouri Baptist women fell 5–2.
On the men's side, Goshen claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three courts. Timo Novak and Denis Stanculov defeated Luca Ebenriter and Arkhip Tokmakov, 6–3, at No. 1 doubles, while Iago Ciucio and Garrett Stoltzfus posted a 6–2 win over Ruslan Anurev and Strahinja Radanovic at No. 2. Filippo Gallo and Paulo Santiago completed the sweep with a 6–3 victory against Nicolas Sanchez and Samuel Sanchez at No. 3.
Missouri Baptist responded in singles play, winning four of the six matches to secure the team victory.
Luca Ebenriter led the charge with a three-set win at No. 1 singles, defeating Iago Ciucio 6–2, 5–7, 6–1. Strahinja Radanovic followed with a dominant 6–0, 6–2 victory at No. 2, while Ruslan Anurev battled back for a 4–6, 6–2, 6–3 win at No. 3. Nicolas Sanchez clinched the match for the Spartans with a three-set triumph at No. 6, rallying for a 3–6, 6–1, 6–3 victory.
Head coach Scott Goodyear praised his team's resilience after the comeback victory.
"This was a match that I knew was going to be close," Goodyear said. "I'm proud of the guys for fighting till the end!"
Goshen earned its remaining points with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
On the women's side, Missouri Baptist secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Melissa Jangarasheva and Yvonne Shannon earned a 7–6 win at the top position, while Jocelynn Carmody and Bissola Lassissi added a 6–2 victory at No. 3.
Goshen rallied in singles play, winning five of the six matches to claim the 5–2 victory.
Jocelynn Carmody recorded Missouri Baptist's lone singles point with a three-set comeback at No. 3, rallying for a 0–6, 7–5, 10–5 victory.
