MBU Wins 3-1 Against Missouri Valley in Complete Team Win

The Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team followed up Friday night's victory with another win Saturday afternoon, defeating Missouri Valley University 3-1.

Missouri Valley took the first point of the match with a kill by Julia Brazil, but the Spartans quickly responded with a 10-0 run. Kills from Fernanda Perini and Herdie Castillo highlighted the run, while a series of Viking errors helped MBU build its early advantage. The Spartans continued to control the set, cruising to a 25-14 victory.

To begin the second set, three service aces from Katie Hunt helped the Spartans jump out to a 6-2 lead. Missouri Valley fought back to tie the set at 9-9, with Vikings defensive specialist Emily Elias recording two service aces during the comeback. An Ashlynn Hughes kill then sparked a 10-1 Spartan run, opening up a 19-10 advantage. The Vikings put together a late run of their own, but MBU closed out the set 25-17, ending it with a service ace from Julia Reis Pereira.

Set three featured a back-and-forth battle with six lead changes. MBU held a 19-16 advantage late in the set before Missouri Valley closed on a 9-4 run to take the set 25-23. Setter Valentina Navarro recorded a season-high seven assists in the set.

Castillo took over in the fourth set, recording five kills to help the Spartans close out the match. Her five kills brought her team-leading total to 11 on the afternoon. With the set tied at 21-21 late, MBU finished on a 4-0 run to secure the 25-21 victory and complete the 3-1 match win.

The Spartans will be back in action Tuesday evening against William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.
