OWENSBORO, Ky. - An early break from Heart of America Athletic Conference play gave Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer the opportunity for a road trip to Kentucky to face Brescia University. The Spartans handled their business, defeating the Bearcats 3-0.
The match was all MBU from the beginning as the Spartans controlled possession early and often, forcing the Brescia backline into troubling positions. A pair of corner kicks and shots gave Missouri Baptist multiple opportunities to get on the board.
That inevitable time would come eventually. During the 30th minute, junior forward Nate Boos held possession from 20 yards out. Seeing an opening in the defense, Boos blasted a shot towards the goal, managing to strike it past the Bearcat goalie for the Spartans' first goal of the night.
Just a few minutes later, with the offense again pushing the envelope, Eroy Gonsalves would take a shot on goal, this attempt being saved by keeper Pedro Montanes. The ball was rebounded, finding its way to Ole Petschner, the freshman putting his first shot into the back of the goal as a Spartan. Missouri Baptist would enter halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans wasted no time out of the break. Boos, again involved on the offense, found one of the squad's most efficient attackers thus far, Adel Smajlovic. Smajlovic displayed his excellent footwork again to work past three defenders and finish the play for a third team goal.
Missouri Baptist played aggressive but smart the rest of the way, holding out for a 3-0 victory.
Man of the Match, Sean Bannon, was essential in the clean sheet by the defense with some big tackles, leading his team and setting the offense up with his line-breaking passes.
Goalkeeper Sean Stone adds yet another shutout to his 2026 resume, saving two shots from the Bearcats' offense.
"We had a very long day," said Head Coach Roosevelt Peters. "We had breakfast at 7 a.m. and hit the road for four hours. The guys took care of business, a professional performance. Everybody off the bench was influential; everybody touched the field today and had something to prove and played like they had something to prove. I am very proud of everybody."
MBU Men's Soccer is set for a battle to remain undefeated against the reigning NAIA National Champions and current No. 17 ranked Grand View University Vikings on Spartan Field on Saturday, Sept. 19th at 7 p.m.
